PPE Inspection for Certification & Compliance
Training is now available for Height Safety PPE Inspection and is recommended. As a pre-requisite, persons must have NZQA Unit Standards 15757, 17600, 23229, 24045 certification and be competent (knowledge & experience) with Height Safety Equipment handling to be able to recertify equipment for safe use ('test and tag'). Equipment must be inspected for visible defects in the webbing, stitching and hardware. Inspections shall be conducted at the following intervals (see table below).
Aside from formal 'test and tagging' discussed above, all equipment requires visual safety inspection Before and After each use.
For formal recertification at the intervals noted in the table below, all equipment should be labelled and dated by the recertifier, the details and serial number logged and recorded, and a pass certificate issued.
Examples of defects and damage
The following defects and damage have the potential to result in the degradation and/or weakening of the lanyard or harness: cuts, surface abrasion, edge abrasion, stitching damage, added knots in lanyards, chemical attack, paint or other markings, heat or friction damage, UV degradation, partially deployed energy absorber, contamination, damage or deformation of fittings, damage to sheath or core of kernmantle ropes.
Withdrawing Equipment from Service
Equipment should be withdrawn from use, destroyed or returned to the manufacturer, if:
• there is no evidence that a lanyard or harness has been inspected by a competent person within the last six months;
• identification is not evident , Standard, Serial Number and Date of Manufacture
• a lanyard or harness is thought to be defective, or if there is any doubt about its safety after a pre-use check or interim inspection;
• a lanyard or harness that has been used to arrest a fall should never be reused. It should be withdrawn from service immediately and destroyed.
Care should be taken to ensure that equipment removed from service is not able to be used by another person.
